The Danish Riviera has attracted tourists and Copenhagen's upper class for more than 170 years. The Copenhagen art elite, led by the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg and her husband Johan Ludvig Heiberg,  fled to the forest and beach in Hornbaek,  from the noise and chaos of the big city.

Because of the special light, which can also be experienced in Skagen, it was Hornbaek who was to introduce the city and beach to the north coast's new visitors – the artistic elite, who included P.S. Krøyer, H.C. Andersen, August Strindberg and Holger Drachmann.
